Getting started

There are many ways to get started. First, you need to decide on your travel goals. What is it that you want out of your travel? Are you interested in local travel, travel to tropical locations, travel to historical destinations, state parks, the seven wonders of the world, cruises to varying locations, etc. It's like any plan, you should develop a short-term, medium term and long-term plan. What do you want to accomplish in one year, in 2-3 years, and in 5 years or more! Do you plan your travel as a get-away just for your significant other or are you planning your travels with your family, immediate or extended.

When you know your plans, then you must start committing to it. Act accordingly. Start your research, talk with others who have taken similar trips, etc.

For us, we have 3 kids, and my in-laws were already travelling around the world by cruises, mainly with the "dam" ships. It was actually with my in-laws that I originally began to travel. First, to Orlando and then in later years after children, it was to Myrtle Beach, which was close enough to travel by car (12 hours from our home). My in-laws were vacation owners through Sheraton and we travelled almost every year when the kids were little to Myrtle Beach, where the cost of a trip to stay at a condo in Sheraton Broadway Plantation Villa Resort. Of course, back then, the cost of everything is relative to the time, but we could normally get away for a family vacation for no more than $2,000 per year.

Of course, we were always those kinds of people that would take the "timeshare tour" just to get free tickets to a show or discounted meal tickets to a local restaurant.

Then, when we were in our mid 30's and during a trip to Orlando Vistana Villages, we decided it was time to take the plunge, make the sacrifice and during our tour, purchase a week at that location, which was transferrable to anywhere in the U.S. where Sheraton had established other vacation ownership locations.

Check back later for more details on how we financed this yearly vacation and why and what comes next...much more to come and to share with you. Lots of good stuff, tips and tricks, costs and savings and what wonderful locations you can travel to cheaply or within your budget. See you soon, travel gurus!!!
